Al-Anon is a 12-Step program of peers who share their experience in applying the Al-Anon principles to problems related to the effects of a problem drinker in their lives. It is not group therapy and is not led by a counselor or therapist. This support network complements and supports professional treatment.
Alateen is a 12-Step program that supports teens who are struggling with the effects of someone else’s problem drinking. Many Alateen groups meet at the same time and location as an Al-Anon group. Alateen meetings are open only to teenagers. Alateen is not a program for young people seeking sobriety.
No advance notification or written referral is necessary to attend an Al-Anon or Alateen meeting. Anyone affected by someone else’s drinking is welcome to attend.
There are no dues or fees. Groups are self-supporting and usually pass a basket around for a voluntary contribution to pay for rent or Al-Anon literature.
Our formal name is Al-Anon Family Group Services, A Texas Non-Profit Corporation. The purposes for which the Corporation was formed are: “To encourage, assist and serve the families and friends who have been effected by some else's drinking; to reinforce their efforts to understand the facts about alcoholism; to disseminate information in relation thereto and to conduct, and participate in, any other classes of service to assist families and friends of alcoholics in dealing with their problems.”
To that end, the Corporation is to be a service center for Al-Anon and Alateen members in Houston and the surrounding area, based on the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and Twelve Concepts of Service for Al-Anon and Alateen, all as promulgated and interpreted from time to time by the World Service Organization of Al-Anon. We furthermore, serve as a Literature Distribution Center (LDC) to provide Al-Anon members with local access and quick delivery of Al-Anon books, pamphlets, booklets, guidelines, and other Al-Anon material. We generally serve as an Al-Anon Information Service (AIS) including some or all of the functions of an AIS as described in the Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual.
The Board of Directors of the Corporation is a group of self-perpetuating members that volunteer their time and talents. We welcome Al-Anon members to attend our monthly meetings.
Al-Anon’s program of recovery is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Steps are the foundation for personal recovery in Al-Anon, and the Traditions help Al-Anon groups sustain their unity and fellowship. The Twelve Concepts of Service provide guidance for service in the Al-Anon fellowship.
